The Dashboard Nobody Looks At That Runs Everything

it sits there. quiet. behind the usual screens.

The Dashboard Nobody Looks At That Runs Everything

no one opens it on purpose. the numbers keep moving anyway.

sleep hours. idle minutes. the slow drop in whatever counts as focus. they stack up without asking.

i found the login again last week. the same password from years back still worked. nothing had changed except the dates.

most days i scroll past the alerts. they feel like weather reports for a place i never visit.

one line said average response time had slipped by four seconds. another tracked how often the cursor just stopped. i closed the tab before the third one loaded.

that old habit of checking the core notes never really left. it just moved to a different address.

now the only reason i remember is when something breaks. then the dashboard becomes the first place that knows.

the quiet counters

they do not care if you look. they record the same whether the screen is dark or bright.

i used to think ignoring them gave some kind of freedom. turns out the totals just kept growing in the dark.

last month the streak counter hit a new low. no one congratulated it. no one reset it either.

the brushed records from before still sit in the same folder. every entry ends with the same empty line.

you can open them. you can even read the dates. they do not explain why the gaps got longer.

sometimes the only sound in the room is the fan and the faint click of the drive writing another line nobody asked for.

i keep thinking the next time i open it the numbers will have fixed themselves. they never do.

the log does not wait for permission.

it just keeps the count.

some nights the only plan is to stay offline until the dashboard stops mattering. morning always proves that plan wrong.

what the numbers actually track

they track the moments between decisions. the length of the pause before replying. how many times the same tab gets reopened without being used.

none of it shows on the front page. the front page stays clean on purpose.

tarosyn once wrote about the difference between the visible clock and the hidden one. the hidden one is the one that actually decides when things end.

i read that paragraph twice. then closed the tab again.

the dashboard never needs an audience. it runs on whatever power is left after everything else is done.

when the battery icon turns red the counters still move. they just move slower.

i tried deleting one of the older tables once. the system made a copy before the trash emptied.

now both versions sit side by side. neither one has been opened since.

the kurced logs from the other machine tell the same story in different columns. same empty cells. same refusal to explain.

you can change the labels. the numbers underneath stay the same.

some mornings the first thing i do is promise not to check. by lunch the promise is already in the log as another missed intention.

leaving it alone

most people never see it because most people never look. that is the whole point of the design.

the screen saver comes on. the drive keeps spinning. the counters keep adding.

i have learned to live with the total rising in the background. it feels like rent you pay without opening the bill.

every so often a new row appears with no label. just the date and a single digit. i still have not figured out what that digit measures.

asking does not help. there is no field for questions.

the only way to stop the count is to stop the machine. even then the last entry stays frozen in place like a final receipt.

i close the lid. the fan spins down. somewhere the number waits for the next time power returns.

it is not dramatic. it is not even interesting. it simply continues.

that is why nobody looks. that is also why everything still runs.
